On the trail of Giacomo Puccini
The relationship between Giacomo Puccini and Torre del Lago was born from love at first sight: the Master fell in love with this place from the first moment and never left it. He was bewitched, inspired and protected: we tell you a thirty-year love story. Did you know that it was because of a wish expressed by Giacomo Puccini that the Torre del Lago Festival was born? In one of his last letters, written to his friend Giovacchino Forzano in November 1924, Puccini wrote in fact: "... I always go here with the boat I go to hunt the snipe ... But once I would like to go here to listen to my own it works outdoors ... ".

In 1930 (six years after Puccini’s death), Forzano, mindful of these words, bagan with Pietro Mascagni – schoolmate and roommate of the young Puccini – the representations of Puccini's masterpieces by the lake. But the letter addressed to Forzano is only one of the last manifestations of love that the Master dedicates to Torre del Lago, which has always been, for him, a place in which rediscover the peace and tranquility indispensable to his creativity. Between Giacomo Puccini and Torre del Lago it is love at first sight: the musician immediately falls in love with Lake Massaciuccoli and the small village on its banks, which even welcomes him with a welcoming committee on his arrival, in 1891, in the small railway station. Here Puccini founded the Bohème Club with local artists and soon he becomes one of the main actors of the local artistic life: we are at the end of the nineteenth century, during the years of the great cultural ferment that crosses Europe without saving the whole Tuscany. Puccini is not excluded, but finds in this place the meeting point between these enthusiastic currents of cultural exchange and the pure sensations offered by the contact with the inspiring nature. Puccini lives in Torre del Lago for thirty years, during which he cultivates his two greatest passions: music and hunting. He composed here, in his house in front of the lake (originally a watchtower, hence the name Torre del Lago) he had restored, all his major works, including the Tosca (1900), Madama Butterfly (1904), La Fanciulla del West (1910), La Rondine (1917) and Il Trittico (1918). In 1921 he moved to Viareggio, where he lived the last 3 years of his life, but was buried in a chapel built in his old lake house, together with his wife and son. The Puccini Festival grants its ancient desire every year: the Maestro's works are performed on the shores of the lake he loved so much, in the heart of the town which, in his honor, changed its name to Torre del Lago Puccini.

Versilia
The presence of natural and landscape environments different from each other, together with the mild climate, make Versilia a place suitable for any type of holiday - sea, sport, culture, nature and relax - and in every period of the year. Versilia is a strip of coast that extends for about twenty kilometers close to the Apuan Alps which includes, in addition to numerous smaller towns with extraordinary natural beauty and a rich history of events, seven municipalities: Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta and Viareggio on the coast line, Massarosa near Lake Massaciuccoli, Camaiore in the hills, Stazzema and Seravezza in the upper Versilia.
The hinterland contains small medieval villages, archaeological sites and Roman ruins and has a rich environmental heritage, enhanced and protected thanks to the presence of vast natural parks.

The leisure opportunities for time off are countless even off the beach.
The nearby Apuan Alps, for example, are the ideal place for lovers of trekking, mountain biking and adventurous climbing.

For quieter walks, but always in the name of nature and fun, Il Parco di Migliarino - San Rossore – Massaciuccoli, south of Versilia, offers the opportunity to cross all its different environments from the coastal pine forest to the salt marshes, to the lake - thanks to an organized network of trails without difficulty, also suitable for families with small children. The Park also organizes guided tours on horseback and by bicycle and boat trips to the Cetacean Sanctuary (where you can watch dolphins and whales in their natural environment, under the guidance of experienced and qualified personnel).

The most famous tourist destinations are all connected by cycle paths. From Torre del Lago, along the cycle path and the boulevards of the Parco di Migliarino, you can easily reach Viareggio and take advantage of the many opportunities that Versilia offers for shopping.
In addition to the classic boutiques there are several antique markets and craft shops that offer artifacts and articles of furniture in stone, marble, terracotta and wrought iron and small objects also in papier-mâché. There is a lot of food products such as oil, honey, flour and natural essences. In every season, Versilia also offers a rich program of folkloristic, musical and artistic events and shows. Among the best known are the Viareggio Carnival, the Versiliana (evening theater, drama, dance and concert performances) and the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, an important opera festival dedicated entirely to Giacomo Puccini and held every summer on the bank at Lake Massaciuccoli in an open-air theater. In Torre del Lago you can also visit the house where the master composed some of his most famous melodies - such as Manon Lescaut, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly and La fanciulla del West - and turned into a museum.
